Thermal annealing of implanted 252Cf fission tracks in monazite

چکیده

Abstract. A series of isochronal heating experiments were performed to constrain monazite fission track thermal annealing properties. The 252Cf tracks implanted into crystals from the Devonian Harcourt granodiorite (Victoria, Australia) on polished surfaces oriented parallel (100) pinacoidal faces and perpendicular crystallographic c axis. Tracks annealed over 1, 10, 100 1000 h schedules at temperatures between 30 400 ∘C. Track lengths measured captured digital image stacks then converted calculated mean equivalent confined that progressively decreased with increasing temperature time. Annealing is anisotropic, axis consistently faster than those face. To investigate how as a function time temperature, one two fanning models fitted empirical dataset. limits partial zone (MPAZ) defined length reductions 0.95 (lowest) 0.5 (highest) for this study. Extrapolation laboratory geological timescales indicates duration 107 years, estimated ranges MPAZ are −44 101 ∘C model −71 143 (both ±6–21 ∘C, 2 standard errors) best-fitting linear (T0=∞). If closure approximated midpoint MPAZ, these results, similar mass energy distributions involved in spontaneous 238U, consistent previously (calculated substantially higher particles) < 50 perhaps not much ambient surface temperatures. Based our findings we estimate (Tc) ∼ 45 25 106–107 making system potentially useful an ultra-low-temperature thermochronometer.

Thermal annealing mechanisms of latent tracks: Apatite versus zircon

Etched tracks of apatite and zircon are both widely used for the determination of the thermal history of Earth’s crust. The present understanding of the annealing process is largely limited to mathematical fits to data for etched track-lengths as a function of temperature and time. Details of the annealing of unetched, latent tracks at the atomic scale have remained elusive, as the original tra...
